Like many other clothes, kimono also has a rank of formality depends on the time, place and occasion. I think I won't wear a pair of jeans to someone wedding or wear a night gown to a night strolling. Even though I aforementioned that, you actually can wear anything you want to wear, as long as you are conscious and keep in mind that kimono is also a culture.
